Although the construction industry has been facing many problems recently, the industrial construction sector is recording unprecedented growth in our country. Huge demand for new warehouse and production space means that steel hall builders are constantly hiring new employees. What kind of candidates are they looking for? Above all, those with experience in large-scale projects involving the construction of industrial halls or logistics facilities. How do you prepare for the recruitment process with a general contractor?
Construction is an important part of the national economy. There are a huge numbers of players in this industry in Poland, which contributes around 7.5% to GDP. They differ primarily in size, i.e. the number of employees, but also in the specialisation – the area in which they operate. In terms of specialisation, we can distinguish between the following companies: residential companies, which build single-family houses, terraced houses, but also housing estates, commercial companies, which build, for example, offices, hotels or shopping centres, companies specialising in infrastructure construction (roads, bridges, tunnels, etc.) and general contractors of large industrial halls, such as logistics facilities, production facilities, but also sports and entertainment halls.
We are one of the larger general contractors in Poland specialising in industrial construction. For more than 20 years, we have built industrial facilities for the country’s largest developers, Polish manufacturing companies and multinationals in the industrial sector. We already have more than 270 completed projects with a total area of almost 2 million sqm.
The contracts we conclude with investors are not for the construction of buildings, but also the supply of steel hall structural elements to individual customer orders and assembly. We also have a well-developed design, construction and in-house architectural department, which in turn allows us to carry out orders under the ‘design and build’ formula. It is a cooperation concept created for investors who want the most comprehensive service from a general contractor. When building industrial facilities, we then coordinate the development process at every stage, including preparation.
Due to the rapid growth of industrial construction, general contractors are primarily looking for construction workers with experience in similar projects. These range from operators of construction machinery to people with skills in supervising the various stages of construction work: sanitary engineers, fitters of prefabricated load-bearing elements or site engineers. Typically, for such positions, employers expect about 2-3 years of experience and require that you have all the authorisations to perform the tasks assigned to the position. However, those applying for the position of a site manager should have more experience – in our company this is a minimum of three years. The area of experience already gained is also important, the site manager specialising in the construction of detached houses will not always cope with managing the construction of an industrial hall. Moreover, this function automatically entails a much broader range of responsibilities, but also duties. It is not only about supervising construction work and completing projects in accordance with technical documentation, health and safety rules and Polish construction law. The site manager should be able to manage people and lead construction teams, and should have experience in dealing with investor representatives, also in English. It is therefore important to make sure if such a requirement is stipulated in the job offer.
Hall builders are also often looking for experts in the area of building structure design, road network design or architects specialising in landscaping the area around the industrial hall, in accordance with the principles of sustainable industrial construction and with concern for the welfare of employees.
In the construction industry, we have long been dealing with a worker’s market, i.e. a situation in which it is the worker who is in short supply and companies have to offer really good employment conditions in order to make people want to work for them. However, this does not at all mean that you can come to a job interview unprepared. Nor does it mean that one can apply for positions that are far beyond they skills. So what to look out for when preparing for an interview?
Certainly, you should carefully read the requirements of your future employer and the description of the responsibilities for the specific job. Attention should be paid to the minimum experience given in years, but also to the authorisation requirements needed to carry out specific work, e.g. to operate construction machinery. It is a good idea to bring all documents proving the experience and qualifications to the interview.
In the context of general contractors specialising in the construction of manufacturing and warehousing facilities, the location of the work is an extremely important issue. Why? Large hall builders tend to have projects all over the country, so when applying for them you should expect to work away from home.
And finally, it is definitely worthwhile to read the general information about the company, its completed projects and values. These can be found on the website and on social media profiles.
